Alaska Air Reaches Deal to Buy Hawaiian: Points Potential

By

Alaska reached a deal to buy Hawaiian Airlines making it possible that Hawaiian Airlines miles may become Alaska miles. If so, picking up some Hawaiian Airlines bonuses may result in valuable Alaska miles.

However, there are still a number of unknowns. It’s not clear if the Department of Justice will approve the acquisition and it is still unknown what will happen to Hawaiian Airlines miles.

If the acquisition does go through and Hawaiian miles are transferred over to Alaska these miles could then be used for booking international flights on OneWorld partners. Additionally, picking up some Hawaiian cards now such as the Barclays Hawaiian Business card could net 70k Alaska miles for only $2,000 spend which is a great deal especially if you’re already at your limit for Alaska cards.

At the very least, this potential acquisition will add Alaska destinations to Asia and the South Pacific increasing the scope of Alaska’s loyalty program and the flexibility of Alaska miles.
